7 new COVID-19 cases in London area Friday, 5 more delta variants confirmed - CBC.ca

Recent developments:

What's the latest situation for the London area?

The Middlesex-London Health Unit is reporting seven new COVID-19 cases on Friday and no deaths. The seven-day rolling average for case counts is six.

While case counts remain low, the number of delta variants of concern continue to climb in Middlesex-London with five additional cases confirmed Friday. There have been 37 delta variant cases since the first case was confirmed on May 27.

"The delta variant outcompetes the other variants of COVID and it quickly becomes the dominant strain," said Dr. Chris Mackie, the medical officer of health for the MLHU, adding the strain is likely to continue in our region.

The delta variant is known to spread more quickly than other variants and is twice as likely to result in hospitalization.

The health unit posted nine recoveries on Friday, with 57 active cases in the region.

London Health Sciences Centre says they are currently caring for 12 patients with COVID-related illnesses, including fewer than five in critical care.

There are fewer than five staff members who have tested positive for the virus and are isolating.

Ontario to move to Step 3 of reopening early

The province plans on further lifting COVID-19 restrictions on July 16, allowing for larger indoor and outdoor gatherings, CBC News has confirmed.

The move will allow for outdoor social gatherings of up to 100 people and up to 25 people inside. Indoor sports and recreational fitness facilities, including gyms, would be able to open again at 50 per cent capacity.

Indoor dining, retail and personal care would have no capacity limits as long as patrons can properly physically distance.

Religious services and events such as weddings and funerals can also operate indoors, as long as people are following other public health measures.

Places such as cinemas, museums, aquariums, casinos and bingo halls can run at 50 per cent capacity indoors and 75 per cent outdoors. Concerts, theatres and sports facilities will be able to operate at 50 per cent capacity inside, with a max of 1,000 people. If outside, they can run at 75 per cent capacity with a max of 5,000 people for unseated events and 15,000 people for events with fixed seating.

Ontario was originally moving to Step 3 on July 21, but the province has passed its COVID-19 vaccination target for entering Step 3, with 78 per cent of adults vaccinated with one dose and 49 per cent fully vaccinated as of Wednesday.

Vaccinations in Middlesex-London are still below the provincial threshold with 77.4 per cent of adults having one dose and 37.1 per cent with two doses as of last week.

COVID-19 across the region and beyond

A COVID-19 outbreak at Saugeen First Nation is ongoing with a total of 99 confirmed cases to date. Of those, 56 are remain active, with seven people now being treated in hospital.

A state of emergency was delared at the First Nation last week when case counts escalated as the delta variant infected 74 people at the time, the majority who had not been vaccinated.

Southwestern Public Health posted three additional cases of COVID-19 on Friday and no deaths. There are 17 ongoing cases in Elgin-Oxford, including six cases in Woodstock and four cases in St. Thomas.

Huron Perth Public Health reported two new cases of coronavirus in Huron County and no deaths. There are 12 active cases in the health region.

Meanwhile, Ontario saw 183 new cases of COVID-19 and nine more deaths.

There are 202 patients being treated for COVID-19 in hospitals across the province, including 143 who require a ventilator to breathe.
