Dubé urges young adults to get vaccinated, says vaccine passport is at stake

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé is urging young people to get vaccinated, saying they could make the difference in whether or not the province needs to use a vaccine passport this fall.

Quebec has set a goal of having 75 per cent of the 12 and older population fully vaccinated by September. If outbreaks continue by then, the province may require proof of vaccination to access non-essential services.

“Young people must make the difference if we want to avoid using the vaccine passport,” Dubé said in a tweet Friday morning. “The (Delta) variant is already present in Quebec.”

Dubé noted the percentage of Quebecers 12 and over having received both doses is climbing by about one per cent each day. It reached 57 per cent Friday.

In the last four weeks, 95 per cent of new cases have been detected among people who are either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Among adults, people between the ages of 18 and 39 still have the lowest vaccination coverage in Quebec.

European agency clears Moderna vaccine for children 12-17

The European Medicines Agency on Friday recommended authorizing Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 12 to 17, the first time the shot has been authorized for people under 18, the Associated Press reports.

The EU drug regulator said research in more than 3,700 children aged 12 to 17 showed that the Moderna vaccine — already given the OK for adults across Europe — produced a comparable antibody response.

In Quebec, authorities have so far only used the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 12 to 17. As of Thursday, roughly 79 per cent of the age group had received a first dose, and 17 per cent their second.

Quebec may need more than 75% to get vaccinated, experts warn

Though Quebec’s goal of fully vaccinating 75 per cent of Quebecers 12 and older by September is laudable, public health experts say it could take much higher protection to keep the pandemic under control this fall.

Several experts who spoke with the Montreal Gazette this week were hesitant to pinpoint an exact percentage the province should aim for, but all agreed the goal should be to get the highest coverage possible.

“Because we’re a little bit at the mercy of what the virus is actually going to do, I don’t think you can put a pin on a chart and say, ‘OK, we’ve hit 75 per cent, we’re fine,’” said Dr. Brian Ward, professor of Infectious Diseases at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre.

Two synagogues in a shared building in Laval recently told their approximately 250 members only those who have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine will be permitted to enter as of Saturday — a move management says has been met with positivity thus far.

“We had a general meeting with our membership, and most of the members said to us that they would not come to synagogue if they would have to sit beside people who are unvaccinated,” said Mike Andrati, president of Shaar Shalom.

Uncertainty over bosses’ back-to-work plans worries telecommuters: poll

A lack of clarity from employers on back-to-the-office protocols as the COVID-19 pandemic recedes has left some workers worried by the prospect of heading back to their workplace.

And employees still in the dark over how a return to the office will play out think that lack of information signals an end to months of telecommuting, a possibility that leaves them even more concerned.

That worry manifested itself in an online survey of 3,000 Canadians conducted May 28-June 4  by LifeWorks, formerly known as Morneau Shepell.
