The CIBC Run for the Cure went virtual to fundraise for the Canadian Cancer Society on Sunday.
The event, which involves a 5K or 1K run or walk, is the largest single-day activity organized by volunteers in Canada in support of the breast cancer cause, according to the website.
Thousands of Canadians come together every year for an in-person run but due to COVID-19, the event went virtual this year, with opening ceremonies livestreamed online.
“Through a newly upgraded mobile app, participants built their virtual runners and tracked their distance as they walked or ran in their neighbourhoods,” said a news release.
The run is held every fall in across Canada. People are encouraged to join or start a team, or participate as an individual. This year saw more than 20,000 participants across the country.
The initiative began in 1992 as a way to raise awareness and fundraise $85,000 for breast cancer research. Over the years, more than $480 million have been raised since then for the cause.
This year organizers confirmed they have raised more $9 million for Canadians impacted by breast cancer.
For anyone who wishes to donate after the event, the website remains open to donations until the end of the year.
According to the event website, the next run is scheduled for Oct. 2, 2022.
