MLA Davies says new restrictions in the north “add more worry” to people struggling to pay bills - Energeticcity.ca

“We are proud that we have provided the highest per-capita supports for businesses and people throughout this entire pandemic,” said Kahlon. “Just in the north alone, that means $15 million that has gone directly to business owners so that they can pivot their businesses and navigate this challenging time.”

Davies argued that there was still money that hadn’t been dispersed to business owners.

“Let’s look at the program that’s been rolling out for the first, second, third wave. $156 million of $470 million combined small business recovery grant and the circuit breaker. That’s only a third that has been put out as of this summer. $300 million still not put out to these businesses that need it,” said Davies, who added that it’s not multi-national corporations looking for support.

“We’re talking small businesses, ma and pa shops, men and women in the Peace country, throughout the north that are supporting their communities. It’s kind of like this government and the premier lives in a bubble that they can’t look beyond.”

Davies says if the government is going to impose restrictions on the region, the businesses need assistance so that they can support their communities.

Kahlon argued that the figures Davies put forward were “completely off.”

“$526 million have gone out to small businesses throughout this province. $15 million in the region that the member is from going directly to businesses. We’re leading the country in economic recovery.”

Davies posted the exchange on his Youtube page, adding that his numbers come from the NDP government’s own first-quarter report.

“I asked the minister if he will be supporting businesses in the north that are struggling to hang on – unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like it.” reads the caption on the video.
