Drunk Driver POV: Dashcam catches Escalade driver hitting cars, hydrant, and more - Driving

Article content

Recovered from the dash cam of a Cadillac Escalade that came to a stop with a missing tire and a bunch of body damage near Gilley Avenue and Marine Drive on January 8, 2021, the video highlights the SUV’s swervy journey from Richmond to Burnaby.

The vehicle appears to spend about as much time on the left side of the yellow line as on the right, narrowly missing multiple oncoming vehicles. The driver blows through a red light, albeit not very speedily, and bumps over the ditch, almost contacting a telephone pole, before going on to run into multiple parked cars and over a fire hydrant, which sent water gushing into nearby homes, causing an estimated $28,000 in flooding damage on top of the $6,600 of destruction to city property.

But the driver surfed away from the scene and eventually came to a halt after blowing a stop sign on one side of an intersection and crashing into another one on the other (not how stop signs are typically used, but OK). Shockingly, the 62-year-old driver refused to cooperate with police or blow into a breathalyzer. He was convicted of impaired driving anyway.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

With most of us already having entered the period of excessive consumption that we call the holidays, the 2-minute clip is a well-timed reminder to plan for a safe ride home after a night of revelry and always watch the roads for intoxicated drivers. ‘Tis the season.

“It is shocking that nobody was killed or injured, including the driver,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP. “This driver made a decision to put himself and others at risk when he got behind the wheel that night and drove through three cities. Burnaby RCMP is sharing the video in hopes it may deter others from drinking and driving”
