More than half of the 5,100 vehicles stolen in 2021 were SUVs, according to insurance comparison website HelloSafe. The 2018 Honda CR-V sits at the top of the rankings, followed by 2019 Ford pickups and the 2019 Lexus NX SUV.

The website uses data from the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Équité Association and Statistics Canada.

According to HelloSafe’s analysis, Quebec is less affected by auto theft than other large provinces, with 5.9 vehicles stolen per 10,000 inhabitants ,versus 7.3 for Ontario and 13.1 for Alberta.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada estimates about 80,000 vehicles were stolen nationwide in 2021, costing the public and insurers almost a billion dollars.

The Sûreté du Québec says many simple common-sense measures, like ensuring doors are locked and windows closed, are not taken in “a good proportion” of vehicle thefts it investigates.

Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau noted leaving a vehicle without removing the keys from the ignition or locking doors is an infraction of the Highway Safety Code.

The SQ also recommends ensuring valuable objects are not visible in a vehicle, and disabling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functions.
