RCMP identifies suspects after shots fired on Witchekan Lake First Nation in northwest Sask. - CBC.ca

A dangerous persons alert that was previously provincewide is now focused on Witchekan Lake First Nation, where police say shots were fired Monday.

Spiritwood RCMP continue to investigate the shooting incident on the First Nation, about 165 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.

Around noon CST, RCMP said there were several armed suspects at large in the area and that they may have been in a mid-2000s dark red Mustang.

The RCMP has identified the suspects as Kelly Witchekan, 22, and Melvin Starblanket, 33.

Police are actively trying to locate the men, who have connections to Witchekan Lake First Nation.

Witchekan has brown hair and eyes, is five-foot-nine and 140 pounds. Starblanket has black hair and brown eyes, is five-foot-nine and 160 pounds.

Police have also determined that the Mustang, which has been found, was not involved in the shooting incident.

RCMP say they don't believe at this time that the incident at Witchekan Lake First Nation is connected to a string of fatal stabbings in James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, Sask..

There will continue to be an increased police presence in Witchekan Lake First Nation and surrounding areas. More emergency alerts will be sent to areas where public safety risk is identified, according to RCMP.

RCMP are telling people in Witchekan Lake First Nation to remain vigilant.

They say don't approach suspicious persons or pick up hitchhikers and to report any information to police.
