Six more daycares have been closed in Calgary’s daycare E. coli breakout after children attending those locations tested positive for E. coli. Some of the children were connected to daycares from the original outbreak, said Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.
Also, the Vik Academy has been reclosed for precaution and they are awaiting new results.
Eleven daycares were initially closed when the outbreak began. As of Sept. 15, there were 337 lab-confirmed E. coli cases.
The latest notification came near midnight Friday from Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mark Joffe. Dr. Joffe said these locations were being closed down for precautionary reasons.
The six locations are:
- Active Start Country Hills
- CanCare Childcare – Scenic Acres location
- CEFA Early Learning Childcare North
- MTC Daycare
- Renert Junior Kindergarten
- Calgary JCC Child Care
“Facilities will be required to be cleaned and sanitized and all children will be tested to confirm their negative status before returning to the centre,” said Joffe.
“All facility operators have been contacted, and parents of these facilities will be directly notified as soon as possible by the operators working with Alberta Health Services.”
Dr. Joffe said he understands that families have gone through a challenging situation but pleaded with them to follow the health rules.
“However, it is crucial for parents who have children who attend these daycares follow the guidance being given to them by health care professionals,” he said.
“If your daycare is closed, please respect why this is done and keep your children at home. Only send your child to another facility if they have tested negative for E. Coli and have no symptoms.”
Dr. Joffe is also asking all daycare operators in the Calgary region to confirm the health and daycare history of new child intakes to the facility.
“By working together and following health guidance, we will stop this outbreak,” he said.
On Friday, the province offered $2,000 to those families with children infected in the initial outbreak.
