Latest News as Gaza Prepares for Israeli Offensive

Egypt is expected to open a border crossing from Gaza to U.S. citizens and some others as refugees from the strip seek to flee ahead of an expected Israeli ground invasion.

Here’s what to know:

Evacuations: U.S. citizens were expected to be allowed safe passage across the Rafah border crossing into Egypt amid a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, though the move faced delays.

Casualties: More than 1,400 Israelis have died since the Hamas assault began. Israel said 289 of its soldiers have been killed. In Gaza, officials said the Palestinian death toll is at 2,750. The number of U.S. citizens killed has risen to 30, while 13 remain unaccounted for.

Hostages: An Iranian official said Hamas is ready to release hostages held in Gaza but isn't able to do so under Israeli bombing. Israel said Hamas was holding 199 hostages and that it had intelligence about their whereabouts.

U.S. response: The U.S. military has selected about 2,000 troops to prepare for a potential deployment to support Israel, though they aren't intended to serve in a combat role, U.S. defense officials said. Secretary of State Antony Blinken returned to Israel after touring six Arab nations. President Biden has been invited to visit Israel and is considering a trip.

Lebanon: Israel declared its northern border with Lebanon a closed military zone on Sunday as deadly clashes with Hezbollah forces intensified.

West Bank: Deadly violence has surged in the West Bank, where concerns are rising that the territory could erupt into another front in the war.
