Letter: New West police need to do more 'spot checks' - The Record (New Westminster)

Editor:

I'd like to see more spot checks completed by the New Westminster Police Department with regard to vehicles driving around the city and in neighbouring jurisdictions with burned-out vehicle lights.

This seems to have become commonplace around here.

On the local streets and highways there have been countless times I've been behind a vehicle with one or two burned-out brake lights, tail-lights and/or the rear window brake/tail light. These lights are something that should be checked regularly by vehicle owners.

I think it was a poor decision to cancel the AirCare program altogether, as vehicles should be checked regularly by licensed technicians during overall yearly safety inspections; this would include doing light audits.

Another infraction I would like to see enforced is more HOV spot checks. The HOV lane is not a "fast lane" it is for "high-occupancy vehicles."

That usually means a minimum of two persons inside a vehicle unless otherwise labelled. It is also an added perk for those who have a low emissions vehicle.  Many times I see drivers speeding and in violation of the use of this lane and/or not having the proper sticker or required number of occupants.

Both of these increased trends are signs of people clearly only thinking about themselves and not caring about the safety of others in their chosen communities.
